Fire crews in Kamloops now have a dollar figure for property saved from two urban interface fires last summer.
Kamloops Fire Rescue chief Mike Adams says crews saved more than $21 million dollars in property during the East Shuswap Road and Batchelor Heights wildfires.
“We took that value from the most recent BC Assessment, and extrapolated it on GIS map, and look at the facts with regards to fire spread and conditions.”
Adams also points out no structures were lost in either of those blazes.
“Damage was confined to obviously the environment, which is unfortunate, but if you across the patch and when the snow disappears I think the grasses will come back. And some of that is a good news story in a way when it comes to fuel management and mitigation. So some of these natural burns will play in our favor. That’s not to say how incredibly uncomfortable that is for everybody, myself included, when it burns that close to the city.”
The East Shuswap Road fire grew to 500 hectares, and the Batchelor Heights fire was 60 hectares and stopped just feet away from some homes.
