Kamloops RCMP have taken a 59-year-old man into custody after a standoff at a townhouse that reportedly lasted nearly 10 hours.
Staff Sgt. Edward Preto says police were called to the home in the 2000 block of Robson Place just before 8 p.m. last night, responding to a possible domestic dispute.
“Upon police arrival, a male exited the residence with a black handgun. When challenged by police, the male went back inside his residence, closing the door. The male refused to surrender to police despite negotiations by telephone,” Preto says.
The RCMP Emergency Response Team was called “in the early morning hours” this morning, Preto says, and tear gas was then used to get the suspect outside.
Residents tell NL News the incident ended around 5:30 a.m., nearly 10 hours after it began, and that people living nearby were evacuated during the standoff. Holes in the upstairs windows of the home where the incident happened appear to be due to the use of tear gas.
Police have not laid charges but Preto says they are continuing to investigate. It’s not clear if anyone was hurt during the incident.
