While the province has decided to forge ahead with the Local Government Auditor General’s office after a review, that hasn’t changed any minds with the Union of BC Municipalities.
UBCM President, and Kamloops Councillor, Arjun Singh says local governments are still not a fan of the municipal Auditor General.
“Our position is still we do not support the office,” he said. “Unfortunately, it rolled out initially with no consultation or collaboration with local governments was very unfortunate.”
“We didn’t participate in the review. We were at the table talking with the province about the office and that was a fair process. The cost of each individual AGLG review right is about half a million dollars. Value for money – is that even happening?”
The local government Auditor General’s office had a dubious start taking two years to produce its first audit leading to the first municipal AG Basia Ruta to be fired.
Singh says since then things have really improved with the AGLG’s office and local government’s are willing to adopt best practices any audit finds.
