When the B.C. carbon tax goes up on April 1, Vancouver will have the highest taxes on fuel in any major North American city.
That’s according to Dan McTeague, a Senior Petroleum Analyst with Gasbuddy.com.
In Vancouver, it’ll mean higher taxes on fuel that in places like New York City and Los Angeles for several reasons.
“It tolerates a much higher level of taxation, the cost of bringing in gasoline because there just isn’t enough room left on the Trans Mountain pipeline,” McTeague said.
“Resisting pipelines has a tremendous cost, and unfortunately, it’s being borne by many motorists in Vancouver who really have no choice to go south of the border to go buy a lot of their fuel.”
In the Tournament Capital too, McTeague says we’ll be paying more for gas on April 1.
“In Kamloops, it’s going up about 1.2 cents per litre with GST,” he noted. “Of course, that goes up every year by the same amount. We saw a similar increase last year.”
“It won’t be as steep as the areas served by TransLink in Vancouver.”
The B.C. carbon tax goes to $40 per ton this April, and will eventually reaches $50 per tonne in 2021.
The TransLink tax is also increasing from 17 cents to 18.5 cents per litre of gas purchased in Metro Vancouver.
And on April 1st, Vancouver will become host to the highest taxes on fuel of any major city North America 👍 https://t.co/Gfm47036cM
