The Chair of the Kamloops School Board says she is waiting to hear from the province as it moves to address a growing number of misinformed people opposing vaccines.
“What it means is that in September parents will be asked to present their child’s vaccination record when they come to school,” said Kathleen Karpuk.
She wants parents to understand this is not about mandatory vaccinations.
“What they are requiring is that you have to report your child’s vaccination record,” added Karpuk. “For instance, if we have a child who is immune compromised and cannot have a vaccine that child is not going to be barred from school.”
“But we will have a record that, that child does not have their vaccines so if we need to take precautions we can.”
Karpuk says school officials do not have the ability to ban kids from schools because they are not vaccinated or are sick.
She notes the district will continue to do what it always does by sending out notices to all impacted parents whether it is measles, head lice, or some other health concern.
