A local advocacy group says Friday’s rally outside Valleyview Secondary School won’t be the last.
The Advocates for SD73 want to raise awareness about the need for funding in Kamloops, across the School Division.
Group member Kerri Schill says they’re going through the list of priories set by the school board.
“Our plan is to rally at other places that are chronically overcrowded throughout the city as well because each school and each child matters and we want everybody to understand that we’re not just focused on Valleyview Secondary, we’re focusing on all of SD73,” she said.
Schill adds when it comes to funding, SD73 doesn’t have wants, it has needs, and they’ve reached out to other community partners for support.
“Right now we do have support from our Parent Advisory Councils,” she noted. “As well, we have put out interest towards the City of Kamloops – Mayor and Council.”
“We’re asking for support, we’re asking for letter writing. I believe KADREA is on board well, and they’re actually doing up a letter of support and they really support us as well.”
She says they’ve also reached out to the business community as well.
The province hasn’t explicitly announced funding, but Education Minister Rob Fleming said they’re very close to deciding on expanding or replacing Valleyview Secondary – SD73’s top priority.
