B.C.’s Education Minister says there has been plenty of improvement in filling teacher vacancies after two school years where district’s struggled to hire.
Rob Fleming says the teacher shortage has started to iron itself out thanks to things like international recruitment and increasing spaces in teacher training programs.
“I think what we’re seeing around teacher hiring is that many districts have no active postings at all. They’ve hired 100 per cent of the teachers that they need for the current school year.”
Fleming says a wave of new teacher should roll out of university and begin seeking jobs just in time to help fill the need in districts in the new school year.
He says the ministry was also proactive in identifying the need, especially for specialist teachers, and then recruiting to fill.
