The top cop in Kamloops says from morale at the local detachment is high, despite a number of high-stress incidents lately.
Syd Lecky says part of the RCMP’s vision is to take care of their people, and he says there are critical incident debriefs and mental health services available.
“I honestly feel that morale has actually been pretty good, and it speaks to the quality of the individuals that we have working with us. I certainly can’t take credit for it because I don’t deserve it, but I can tell you the individuals collectively have pulled together,” Lecky says.
“But I also know and I said to council, there is a breaking point. You can’t sustain the pace we’ve been working at indefinitely without having consequences at the end. So that’s kind of the focus and it will be my focus moving forward. We got to take care of our people.”
In the past six months some of those local police situations have included four homicides, an armed robbery and kidnapping and a shootout with a suspect.
