While the City of Kamloops tackles how to regulate legal marijuana producers, one thing is clear, there will be a marked difference between the cannabis and liquor industries.
City of Kamloops Business License Inspector David Jones says unlike wineries or distilleries legal cannabis producers, craft or otherwise, won’t be able to sell their own product on site.
“I don’t even believe that is on the table at the Federal level or the provincial level,” he said. “From the production facility, the security, and the follow-up and from the seed to the store, it’s quite a rigourous process tracking all that.”
“At this point in time to allow a craft brewer to open up and start retailing their craft cannabis would kind of go against the whole idea of how we’re going to control this culture at this time.”
Jones says the province is in discussions with the federal government about craft cannabis producers and allowing them to grow.
At today’s council meeting, city council will do the second and third reading of a proposed bylaw governing cannabis production in the city ahead of a public hearing.
