The Western Canada Theatre says its outside clients will feel the brunt of the Sagebrush Theatre closure this summer.
Managing director Evan Klassen says during the spring and summer the Theatre is typically booked for dance recitals, school performances and graduations.
“Truthfully, we’re just about at the end of our 18-19 season. We have one more mainstage production, which is Mom’s the Word: Nest 1/2 Empty, and that will be relocated up to the Coast. And so that’s happening at the end of this month into the beginning of April,” Klassen says.
“So after that, our mainstage season is dark. And that’s very fortunate for us as a theatre company. Of course, the Sagebrush at that time frame is typically booked up… so all of those outside clients are about to be impacted.”
The Kamloops-Thompson School District board chair Kathy Karpuk told NL yesterday the closure of the Sagebrush due to roof repairs is now expected to last until September. The facility has been closed since Feb. 15 after a crack in a roof truss was discovered.
“From the venue’s perspective, our clients are understandably concerned about when they may or may not be getting back in,” Klassen says “We are in communication with them, we will be sending them a letter very shortly outlining the uncertainty of the timeline going forward and recommending that events between now and the end of August start looking for other homes.”
The Western Canada Theatre was out up to $45,000 from the relocation of its previous production, Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story.
