One Kamloops councillor wants to see a fee at city-owned boat launches on the Thompson River.
City council voted this week in favour of spending $30,000 to study such a fee, which will come from gaming grants.
Bill Sarai says the city could do something like what is done at a number of boat launches in Kelowna.
“Have a parking meter there where you put your parking ticket on the dash that you’ve paid for,” he said. “And I’ve emphasized to staff, that what I would recommend is that money stays in a pot that goes back to maintaining boat launches.”
Sarai says that way if someone raises concerns about a boat launch not being safe or if it needs repairs, there are funds already there to repair it or address the issue.
“It doesn’t have to go back to the taxpayers,” Sarai added. “So whoever’s using that boat launch is contributing to the maintenance of it, which is a win-win situation.”
Council also voted this week to spend $70,000 to do repairs immediately at boat launches in Pioneer Park and Valleyview.
