Sun Peaks is hoping to crack down on property owners who are supposed to be renting their units but are not.
Mayor Al Raine says in the village core specifically, there is an agreement for owners to rent their units when they’re away. But he says right now the municipality can’t enforce the agreement, since it is between landowners and the province.
“That’s a bit more complicated, the legality of that,” Raine says. “The province has suggested that they may wish to transfer those covenants to the municipality, and let the municipality enforce.”
Sun Peaks council will also likely be looking to limit the number of year-round residents in the village, where the Official Community Plan says suites should be used by tourists and part-time residents.
