No injuries after an overnight fire to an empty house in the 100-block of Wilson Street.
Firefighters were called out around 3:00 AM today, and found the house “heavily involved.”
Assistant Fire Chief Dan Sutherland says there wasn’t a risk of the fire spreading to other houses in the area.
“Crews took a defensive strategy and basically surrounded the structure and soaked it with water until we’ve knocked it down,” he said.
“They’re making sure that the fire is fully extinguished and our fire investigators will be arriving in daylight to have a look and see what they can ascertain.”
Kamloops RCMP confirmed that the house was boarded up after a fire in 2018 damaged most of the interior.
“It is possible that squatters had gained entrance,” said Cpl. Jodi Shelkie. “There was no indication that anyone was inside of the residence during last night’s fire.”
There were some reports of possible explosions in the house, but Sutherland couldn’t speculate what that could have been.
“I did talk to crews on scene and they did indicate it upon arrival there were a couple of small explosions within the home,” he confirmed. “Too speculative to figure out what that would be at this time.”
“Fortis and BC Hydro both attended the scene as well to ensure that both the power and natural gas were off to that particular home.”
As crews will be on scene for a while longer, people are asked to avoid the area of Wilson Street this morning, if they can.
Both firefighters and police will continue the investigation into the cause.
