
A number of prescribed burns in the Lytton area will be taking place beginning this week to reduce the risk of wildfires.
The BC Wildfire Service says there will be six different prescribed burn projects totaling 108.5 hectares, between Thursday and April 21, weather permitting.
“These low- to moderate-intensity surface fires will be lit within pre-established boundaries to remove combustible materials and mimic naturally-occurring ground fires. This type of burn has a minimal effect on mature trees and promote the regeneration of understory grasses, forbs and shrubs,” BCWS says in a news release.
A list of the prescribed burns planned can be seen below.
- Kumsheen: will cover 32 hectares north of Lytton, across Highway 1 from Kumsheen Rafting Resort
- Jade Springs: will cover 16.5 hectares on Crown land, north of Lytton near Highway 1
- Loring Way: Will cover 12 hectares, southwest of the Lytton First Nations Klakhkamich 17 Indian Reserve
- Skuppah Indian Band: will cover 13 hecatres south of Lytton, on the Skuppah 2A Indian Reserve and Inklyuhkintko Indian Reserve
- Cook’s Ferry: covering 17 hectares within the Shawniken 3 Indian Reserve; a continuation of the Murray Creek prescribed burn project from 2018
- Kanaka prescribed burn: will cover 18 hectares east of Highway 1
