Concerns from the spring snow melt are beginning to pop up around the Thompson Nicola Regional District.
Today the Ministry of Transportation issued a travel advisory between Cache Creek and Ashcroft due to potential debris flow on area highways.
TNRD spokesperson Michelle Nordstrom says flooding has also forced North Bonaparte Road to be closed near Pressy Lake.
“A lot of what the Ministry has been working on and seeing is floodwaters and debris flows coming across some of the highway areas, especially in areas affected by the Elephant Hill wildfire in 2017.”
Further, there is a partial road close on Loon Lake Road due to debris, and a travel advisory on Highway 99 near Hat Creek because of potential for debris flow.
In Vavenby, the TNRD has also issued a water quality advisory until further notice, because of turbidity in the North Thompson River caused from the spring freshet.
Nordstrom says that means people with higher health risks, such as infants and seniors, should boil their water for about a minute yesterday.
“For the rest of users, it’s just an advisory at this stage. Just to be aware their water is looking a little cloudy, and the reason is that turbidity in the river levels right now. And that could be happening in many of our water systems as we kind of progress through this runoff right now in the spring.”
