The mayor of Kamloops is on-board with the idea of a ban on plastic bags but he also has some questions still needing answers.
Ken Christian says without question people need to recycle more and get out of the habit of single use plastic items but he is not sold this is an issue for local government to deal with.
“Ultimately this is something that will be solved by consumers. Consumers will dictate what happens with plastic bags. The next place is to have it addressed is with retail. Then probably the next place is with a provincial approach to banning things. Then finally, and probably least efficiently, is local government.”
Christian says he would like to have a discussion about banning plastic bags with the retail sector.
He says with the matter now before council and “internal resources” will look at best practices.
Christian says the plastic bag ban motion tabled by Councillor Dale Bass will be discussed by Council next week.
