The Kamloops Councillor behind the motion to press pause on removing the land titles records is also not buying what the Registrar of Land Titles is selling.
Mike O’Reilly is brushing aside comments from the registrar that his office has the authority to make the decision to remove land title records despite any potential objection from council.
“That could be said about a lot of things. That could have been said with Ajax as well that Kamloops didn’t have say, that city council had no say in that. However we have an opportunity to put our voice forward and have our voice and concerned heard before this is done. That is what we are asking for whether we are able to make that happen.”
He also takes issue with the claim there will be job losses saying that is not what the legal community is telling him.
“They started to inform me of all of the actual private sector jobs that rely on those documents being here. It was not wrong for them to say they are not downsizing any government jobs in Kamloops, that is correct. They are going to be keeping that but it is the private sector jobs that rely specifically on those documents that will be gone.”
He says there are at least a dozen private sector jobs, all businesses that provide land title services, who will be out of a job when the records are gone.
