Most pedestrian crosswalk signs across Kamloops will be fully accessible by the end of this year.
That’s the audible signal you hear at many sidewalks telling you when it’s safe to cross the street.
Community Development Coordinator Ben Chobater says 50 of these signals were installed at various intersections across the city over the last two years.
“And then the city I believe in 2017 or 2018, increased the budget and aimed at the lofty goal of having them all set up within two years,” he said.
“It’ll be one of the great things in this city where every single traffic intersection will have that audible traffic signal for persons.”
Chobater adds many sidewalks also have ramps cut into them to make it easier for people with disabilities to get around.
“And where we don’t have them, they are scheduled to be built,” he noted.
“And almost every one of our traffic intersections will be equipped with those traffic signals by the end of 2019.”
He added locations for the crosswalk signs are chosen in consultation with agencies like the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, the White Cane Club, and the Mayor’s Advisory Committee for Persons with Disabilities.
