Police in Kamloops have arrested a bank fraud suspect who accidentally climbed into an unmarked police vehicle yesterday afternoon.
RCMP Corporal Jodi Shelkie says police were called by a bank on Notre Dame Drive around 3 p.m., when a man was allegedly impersonating a client and trying to transfer money into his bank account.
“As police arrived on scene, the suspect ran out of the bank, and across the road. Officers followed on foot and in their police vehicles. Because the officers were in uniform and driving marked police cars, the suspect was able to quickly identify them and hide behind buildings and in hedges.”
She says the suspect fled as police arrived, and an off-duty officer with his police dog were in the area and heard the incident on the scanner.
“The (police dog service) officer drove his unmarked police vehicle into the area, and when he saw the suspect, motioned him over to his vehicle. So the suspect ran over there and started to climb into the vehicle. As he was starting to climb into the vehicle. As he was climbing in, the officer advised him that he was a police officer and he was under arrest.”
A 51-year-old man from Calgary who is known to police is now in custody.
