A new report done for the Ministry of Health says the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C. is only meeting 60 per cent of standards.
Health Minister Adrian Dix says the report done by regulations expert Harry Cayton says the college has “an underlying culture of resistance” for ensuring public protection.
“Mr. Cayton has made 21 recommendations to the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia to fulfill its public protection mandate. (Yesterday) morning, I issued a directive to the college indicating the expectation that they will implement all 21 recommendations by Mr. Cayton.”
Dix says implementing all recommendations won’t be easy work for the college but he says it is necessary to restore public confidence.
“The Cayton report… finds that the college has an underlying culture of resistance to being fully focused on the safety of patients, and provides evidence of significant, ongoing disfunction at the college including distrust of professional staff and advocacy of the profession over public interests.”
The college has 30 days to respond to directive from the Health Minister.
