Cannabis has been used medicinally for years but it’s still in the infant stages for it healing potential.
When it comes to medicinal cannabis, we mostly think of it as a pain medication
Dr Vincent Maida is a consultant in palliative medicine and wound management at the William Osler Health Centre in Toronto and he’s been studying the healing effects of the drug for the past decade.
He’s seen major breakthroughs in treating skin conditions and thinks it’s just the tip of the iceberg. “My hope as a researcher is that I’m hopefully able to stimulate other researchers worldwide to further the investigation.”
He says he wants to further the science because he believes “This could potentially be what I would describe as a ‘holy grail’ in treating integumentary diseases.”
He says another big advantage to using cannabis topical’s on skin conditions is the patient can administer the medicine themselves, taking away the cost of using medical professionals.
Dr Maida will be speaking at the fifth annual International Skin Integrity and Infection Prevention Conference taking place at TRU this Friday and Saturday.
