With Terry Lake seeking the Liberal nomination, Cathy McLeod as the Tory incumbent, the Kamloops Thompson federal election ballot could soon see a third name.
Bill Sundhu, President of the Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo NDP riding association, says the party will soon choose a candidate.
“People in the Kamloops Thompson Cariboo can expect within the next week to two weeks an announcement of at least one contestant seeking the NDP nomination, possibly a second. There is a bit of a backlog in the vetting process from Ottawa. But we expect an announcement to be fairly imminent. Then the pre-campaign will be well underway.”
Sundhu says they have submitted a nomination date to the party and are waiting for it to be approved.
He was asked if the pressure was on to field a well known candidate to run against Terry Lake and Cathy McLeod.
“Cathy McLeod is going to have to stand on her record, which in my view is one of a rather mediocre and inconsequential member of parliament. I think we will let the voters examine and question Mr. Lake’s true motives for running for political office yet again. We will run a strong candidate and we will run a vigorous campaign and give the voters a genuine choice.”
Sundhu says he is already anticipating a tight three way race in the election battle this fall.
He says in 2015 the Liberal candidate benefited from “a historic” Trudeau wave but in the years since the luster has worn off the Prime Minister due to broken promises and the ongoing CNS Lavalin controversy.
