As we inch closer to the looming federal election the Conservatives are getting ready to roll out the party’s environmental plan.
Kamloops Thompson MP Cathy McLeod says the Tories will be “releasing our environment plan soon.”
McLeod wouldn’t provide details but it doesn’t look like the plan will include a carbon tax.
“The carbon tax is going to make it very very difficult. People are really concerned right now. I look at gas prices and find it ironic that governments who want the carbon tax, who want gas prices high, are all of a sudden are worried the high price of gas. It is an absolutely hypocritical stance that you want the prices high and then all of a sudden it is hurting people and it is really hurting people in rural communities.”
But isn’t that the point with the economic invisible hand to price something high to motivate people to alter their behaviour in order to tackle climate change?
McLeod says the Tories will push back on that.
“Certainly the experts I have heard from say the carbon tax is not high enough to drive behaviour. If it goes as high as it needs to drive changes in behaviour we are really going to in trouble. I think there is other ways to tackle it. I am really looking forward to releasing our environment plan.”
She claims Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions only went down under the Harper government due to the phasing out of coal fired plants and introducing new vehicle standards.
