Environment Canada is warning of late season winter driving conditions on the Trans Canada Highway between Eagle Pass and Rogers Pass.
A low pressure system is expected to dump between 5 and 10 cm of snow tonight and tomorrow.
Meteorologist Bobby Sekhon says snow this late in April is not that uncommon.
“We can get these cold lows that do come through and give snow in the higher elevations even in April, and so it’s a bit of a transition season right now,” he said.
“We haven’t seen much snowfall at all in the last few weeks here for the passes, so this is something that is going to be significant.”
He added that is not all what is expected tonight.
“There is also a risk of thunderstorms for places like Rogers Pass and then into the Kamloops area, so keep an eye out for that, some lightning in the area,” said Sekhon.
“We’re not expecting it to be too widespread, but definitely a risk for it. And then of course, the snowfall transitioning near midnight on the passes.”
In all, 5 cm of snow is expected tonight over Pine Pass, 5 to 10 cm of snow is expected for the Yoho Park – Kootenay Park region, and in Kootenay Pass and the Elk Valley, another 5 cm of snow is expected later tomorrow.
Sekhon says a flurries are possible at the Coquihalla Summit, but he’s not expecting any snow to accumulate.
