The Premier says his government will take action to put an end to money laundering.
John Horgan says he recognizes people want accountability for those involved in laundering hundreds of millions of dollars in dirty money in B.C.
“What we need to do is stamp it out. We have taken steps based on Peter German’s first report to clean up the casino sector. There is much more work to do.”
While Horgan has not committed to holding a public inquiry into money laundering he might have let slip that is what might be coming.
“We have a plan going forward. We are working on that. We will have more to say about the terms of that in the weeks ahead.”
Horgan says it doesn’t matter so much when money laundering started what matters is that people are demanding accountability.
“They want us to make sure we are putting in place measures to stamp it out. That requires cooperation with the federal government. Minister Blair has been working with Minister Eby and Minister Farnworth very cooperatively to this point in time. We want to see accountability and consequences for the actions. The absence of prosecutions has been a big big issue.”
Horgan says people want repercussions for people who laundered money in this province.
The province received two money laundering reports last month one from an expert panel the other a phase two investigation by former RCMP Deputy Commissioner Peter German focused on housing, luxury car sales, and horse racing.
Neither report has so far been released to the public.
