Kamloops RCMP are asking for help in finding a missing 23-year-old South Asian man, who was swept away in the North Thompson River this morning.
Three friends went swimming in the river near Chestnut Avenue around 6:30 a.m., when one of them was swept away.
Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the man was wearing a red sweater and pants at the time, and his friends tried to pull him back to shore but they were unsuccessful.
“Kamloops Fire Rescue deployed their boat immediately after notification but have not located the missing man yet,” she said. “Kamloops Search and Rescue has been deployed and Kamloops RCMP is currently searching the river banks with a drone.”
Shelkie says police are concerned about the man’s well-being, noting that hypothermia is a real possibility at this time of year.
“Kamloops Fire Rescue has put out buoys to determine how quickly the current is flowing but always, there are different places along the river where he may have exited the river or where there are log jams and so on,” she added.
“It’s hard to tell how far he could have made it.”
If you have any information or see the man, contact the Kamloops RCMP.
