Westsyde Secondary students were let out early today after a smoke bomb was set off in the school’s cafeteria.
Principal Chris Preymak says the device was deployed near the end of the lunch period.
“We brought in some industrial sized fans that we had up in our gym mezzanine to clear our the smoke,” he says. “About 20 minutes later, the smoke was gone, so we determined that it would be okay to bring the students and staff back into the building.”
“Once inside the building, some staff and students were starting to complain of headaches and respiratory problems. At that point in time, we determined that we couldn’t continue.”
Preymak says the RCMP has been called in to investigate.
“We’ve got the RCMP liaison officer involved. Since all the students are at home, we haven’t been able to talk to a lot of students yet, so there’s going to be more investigation is going to continue tomorrow morning,” he added.
“The RCMP is involved as well, and they’ll be running their own investigation.”
School will resume as normal tomorrow, provided the smell is no longer an issue.
