The BC Wildfire Service says this May Long weekend was relatively quiet in terms of new fire starts.
Fire information officer Kyla Fraser says province-wide there were 23 new fires between Saturday and Monday.
She says only two fires in that time were started in the Kamloops Fire Centre. Meanwhile, 10 of those were in the Prince George Fire Centre, including seven new fires there yesterday.
“That kind of northern quarter of the province – from Dease Lake over to Fort Nelson and then down to Fort St. John and Dawson Creek – that would be the main area of concern right now. Just given that it’s quite dry, there’s some high-to-extreme fire danger around there, and not a lot of rain forecast for that area.”
The fire conditions in northeast B.C. come as crews in northern Alberta are battling the High Level wildfire which is estimated to be 69,000 hectares in size. The BC Wildfire Service has now sent 267 provincial firefighting personnel to assist with battling that blaze, who will be called back within 19 days.
