The federal Minister of Digital Government says there is no timeline for when a newly-unveiled ‘Digital Charter’ may be enacted.
When asked in Kamloops by NL News, Joyce Murray could only say it “might be soon” that the federal legislation is ready.
Murray did say the Digital Charter will be a collaboration of several ministries.
“We have the Ministry of Democratic Institutions which is really seized with the issue of the social media platforms, and how to protect our democracy not only during elections, but between elections. From abuse of personal information, personal data, and how to make the platforms accountable.”
She says the government has to be mindful of threats to people’s data and of divisions in society that are enabled online.
