The Louis Creek Industrial Park in Barriere may soon have cannabis producers setting up shop.
Barriere mayor Ward Stamer says two separate developer consortiums have purchased lots in the park.
He says specific plans by the companies are still being ironed out.
“It changes because they come up with a set up of designs and then they turn around and change it again. So I’m really not able at this time to tell you exactly what those numbers would be,” Stamer says, referencing the number of jobs the cannabis operations could bring.
“We looked into possibly getting a study on electricity needs. Right now we believe we have enough, but we’d like to do a study with BC Hydro to see where we are with future industrial capacity. And so we’re in the process of applying for a grant right now to be able to see where we’re at with that.”
Stamer says whatever is built is an opportunity to add to the community’s tax base and to add to the local economy.
He says one of the two consortiums of developers has already obtained a license to grow cannabis from Health Canada while the other is still in the process of doing so.
