While concerns mount from local governments over growing legal cannabis costs and no revenue sharing deal yet with the province, B.C.’s Municipal Affairs minister says that concern cuts both ways.
Selina Robinson says legal cannabis costs are still being incurred by the province as well.
Robinson says that is exactly what makes these revenue sharing negotiations with municipalities so tricky is that both legal cannabis costs and revenues are somewhat murky.
“Making sure that we all understand sort of what are the costs on all sides. Certainly the province has costs in terms of the roll out and with the education program and it continuing to roll out so we don’t even know what the actual revenues are,” she said.
“That is where we all need to make sure that we all understand what are we talking about and what is the revenue going to be? I have confidence that the minister of finance will stay in conversation with the UBCM.”
Kamloops mayor Ken Christian has warned the province will be in for a rough ride of a deal is not reached by this fall with cannabis costs then potentially being passed on to local taxpayers.
