Gas prices around B.C.’s southern Interior are expected to jump upwards of 10 cents per litre by tomorrow.
Gasbuddy.com senior analyst Dan McTeague says the wholesale price of gas at the Chicago Spot Market has gone up by 4.1 cents per litre this week.
He says by tonight, stations in the Kamloops area would need to be selling gas at around $1.34 per litre to break even.
“So if you’re selling for $1.33, you’re losing your shirt. You can’t even cover the costs of paying for your electricity to turn on the gas pumps to serve your consumers. You obviously can’t pay to honor credit cards, because credit card rewards and other cashback programs, they’re not coming from the genoristy of banks or the credit card companies, they actually come from the bottom line of that gas station,” McTeague says.
“Normally there’s about a 10 cent a litre margin that goes along with that; it means that prices here in Kamloops are likely to hit $1.45, $1.46 over the next 24 hours if not sooner.”
McTeague says the wholesale increase at the Chicago Spot Market can likely be attributed to demand from the Memorial Day long weekend in the U.S.
At time of posting, most gas stations in Kamloops are currently selling gasoline for about $134.9 per litre, according to gasbuddy.com.
