The Gemstone Care Centre in Brocklehurst are this year’s Safety Den champions, taking home the $1,000 prize.=
General Manager Sandra Lewis says they were proposing their Safety Star Program, which aims to encourage staff engagement in health and safety.
“So they have to take a safety pledge that they are going to work with best practice,” she said. “They have a yellow lanyard so it reminds them everyday what they are doing, and they have a right to go around to any of their co-workers and let them know if their practice is unsafe, how they can improve that practice. We really try to use positive peer pressure.”
Lewis says they haven’t decided what to do with their winnings.
“Colleen Cochrane, who is one of our Safety Star’s that presented at the Safety Den and Shelly [Cantelo, clinical practice and safety manager at Gemstone] are going to meet with the rest of the Safety Stars and kind of figure out what they want to do with that money to celebrate and maybe promote safety within the home a little more and see if we can encourage more folks to become Safety Stars.”
Gemstone Care Centre were one of six finalists chosen to make presentations in Whistler this week in a Dragon’s Den style competition.
Congratulations to everyone who participated in #SafetyDen this year! Thank you to our sponsor @CarnelianTech for helping make Safety Den possible. https://t.co/jZSolauX0F
