The District of Barriere has addressed a water issue that was causing discoloured tap water for some people.
Mayor Ward Stamer says crews have gotten the district’s main water well back online, after it was out of service for about three months for mechanical repairs.
He says the extra pressure on other water lines stirred up manganese in the system.
“Because of some changes and some things we had to do, it wasn’t actually brought back online until early last week. And by Friday morning, we were able to start irrigating again, and by doing that, that gave us the opportunity to flush all our lines. So right now we’re in really good shape,” Stamer says.
“There’s a couple isolated little spots that we’ve had to go down and open up a fire hydrant or open up a standpipe to try to do a little additional flushing. But everything seems to be working very well, we’re pretty happy that we’ve weathered the storm and got through this when we did. Now that the warm weather is back upon us, we’re able to try to bring back our lawns and areas that didn’t get any water in the last month and a half.”
Stamer says the issue has particularly affected water users in the town core, and says the final repair cost will likely be between $50,000 to $60,000.
