B.C.’s Finance minister says frustrations remain after a high profile money laundering meeting with federal cabinet ministers last week.
Carole James says federal Finance minister Bill Morneau and Organized Crime Reduction minister Bill Blair had a lot of good things to say including bringing ten million dollars for RCMP funding.
However she still has lots of unanswered questions and more than a few concerns.
“We certainly feel that, that is not enough and that we need more resources and we need to see dedicated resources. It is really the piece that we have been a bit frustrated by. We really feel that you need a specific unit that looks at prosecutions and criminals when it comes to the RCMP in the area of money laundering because they face pressures as well and the money gets used somewhere else. So we want to see dedicated funds.”
James says she and Attorney General Dave Eby did not beat around the bush in telling the two federal ministers what the province wants.
“We were quite up front to say that words are great and commitments are great but we want to see those dollars actually dedicated specifically to the issue of money laundering. We are now starting to share data. We are starting to shine a light on what is out there. But that is not going to do any good unless we have the RCMP and the cops on the ground and the people to be able to prosecute these cases.”
She says it was good news to hear the federal government will create a joint table with the provinces on money laundering to allow for a more united front.
