The Kamloops School District has asked for 140-thousand in funding to deal with the long abandoned old Pinantan Elementary but while it will be torn down it won’t be the last we see of it.
Board Chair Kathleen Karpuk says the building will actually be relocated and rebuilt.
“It is this beautiful old log building with dovetailed corners and what we actually want to do is take it apart and relocate it beside our Robins Range school that we have in town here. Rebuild it so we can have two examples of how one room schools historically have evolved. We will have two older one rooms schools and a modern school side by side.”
Karpuk says the building would be modified to meet existing building codes.
“We would have to do some modifications to the interior. Basically we would build a new building and put the logs on the outside so that we meet building standards and safety. But it would to all intents and purposes look like that old school was. We would then be able to have field trips.”
She says kids will not only be able to tour through it but also go to class in it to get a taste of history.
