The low snow pack we experienced over the winter has lead to low water levels in rivers across the southern interior and it could have an effect on everything firefighters to fisheries.
Dave Campbell, head of the River Forecast Centre, thinks the Department of Fisheries and Oceans may have to get involved at some point. “Definitely when it comes to things like some of the regulations that might happen on the fresh water side is done by the province and certainly regional fisheries experts are involved in the decision making process.”
“For example close down a fishery on a certain stream or to understand on a particular river where is a critical flow for environmental needs of that fish population.”
Campbell says thunderstorms we’ve been having aren’t necessarily blanketing the landscape and don’t make much of a difference.
He’s also worried low levels can effect fire crews from getting water from a source that’s close to a wildfire.
