B.C.’s beleaguered forest sector was on the table in last week’s western Premiers meeting.
Premier John Horgan says the Premiers have decided to send a communique to the federal government asking Ottawa to reinvigorate transitions programs announced as part of the latest softwood lumber dispute.
“Programs that were announced in 2017, in light of the curtailments that have been announced by interior industries are clearly inadequate,” Horgan said. “The western Premiers agreed with me on that and that is part of the communique. We are going to be working as hard as we can with communities.”
“We set up tables back in April to do a timber supply review area by area.”
Horgan says at the end of the day the timber supply that once fed hungry sawmills in this province were eaten away by wildfires and the Mountain Pine Beetle.
He adds the province needs to look at wood waste, reassess log exports, and add value to B.C. wood products.
