Update – One person is dead after a head on collision on the Coquihalla this afternoon, near the interchange with the Trans Canada Highway in the Kamloops area.
RCMP say a white Toyota Prius collided head-on with a Grey Toyota Sienna.
“The lone driver of the Toyota Prius was pronounced deceased at scene and the lone driver of the Toyota Sienna was treated by EHS and transported to Royal Inland Hospital for further assessment,” said RCMP Sgt. Thomas Dimopoulos.
Traffic northbound in Kamloops is still closed, but Dimopoulos says a single northbound lane is expected to be open shortly.
The RCMP is currently coordinating this investigation with the BC Coroners Service.
Drive BC estimates the highway will re-open at 8:30 p.m.
Original – The Coquihalla is currently closed just south of Kamloops because of what appears to be a head-on collision.
BC Emergency Health Services has confirmed to NL News that one person has been transported from the crash scene but did not comment further.
The incident happened just past the westbound exit for Highway 1. Drive BC says the closure is because of a “serious vehicle incident,” and adds there is no estimated time of the highway reopening.
Argo Road Maintenance says it is rerouting traffic heading from Merritt to Kamloops down Highway 5A. Witnesses say traffic is also getting through at the Highway 1 exit towards Tobiano.
More information as it becomes available.
