Two serious crashes to start the long weekend have resulted in highway closures near Savona and Williams Lake, and one reported fatality.
Highway 1 has been shut down at Pinecrest Road in Walhachin because of a crash that happened just before 5 p.m. Further details of the incident are not clear.
Meanwhile, a woman has been killed in a crash on Highway 97 just north of McLeese Lake this afternoon.
RCMP North District Traffic Services say the fatal head-on crash happened just before 1 p.m., where a Ford Expedition crossed the centre line of the highway and hit a Ford F-350 head on. The female passenger of the F-350 was pronounced dead at the scene, while the male driver was taken by ambulance to hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Expedition suffered serious injuries as well and was air lifted to hospital.
Drivers are asked to avoid the crash scene on Highway 97, and DriveBC says the highway should be reopened by 11 p.m.
At time of posting, there was no word on any potential time of reopening for Highway 1 west of Savona.
