The Village of Ashcroft is looking at asking CN Rail to eliminate train whistles at a crossing on the north end of town.
Mayor Barbara Roden says both CN and CP go through the village, and CP stopped using whistles several years ago at its crossings through the middle of the town. CN’s crossing is at the end of Cariboo Road, near many homes on Tingley and Government streets.
“And now the people who live in north Ashcroft, which is where the CN runs through, there’s one crossing there. And people are asking if we can approach CN to see about whistle cessation there. Because are complaining, and have complained for many years, about the whistles,” Roden says.
“Especially in summer time with windows open. People find it hard to sleep, it’s very disturbing. They have to stop phone conversations, etcetera.”
Roden says the village will be doing a study to see what kind of upgrades would be needed at the crossing to enable CN to stop blowing train whistles.
