This past long weekend was right on par for number of deaths on highways in the province during the BC Day holiday period.
RCMP say there were four total deaths from Friday through Monday. That lines up with what ICBC says is typical. Road Safety Coordinator Ingrid Brakop says 2,300 crashes and four deaths occur in the province on an average BC Day long weekend. “For the southern interior specifically, there are about 70 people that are injured in almost 400 crashes…”
Brakop says there are many factors that lead to the increase in collisions including distracted driving, driving fatigue and the increased volume of vehicles. “If you just plan better for your driving time and make sure that you put those distractions aside. And if you are feeling fatigued just take 15 minutes, pull over on the side of the road, go for a walk, maybe have a little nap.”
RCMP stress that although it wasn’t worse than usual, one death is too many.
