The City of Kamloops is in line to receive a one-time $5.7-million-dollar payout in gas tax funding.
Planning and procurement manager Dave Hallinan says the city, like all other municipal governments, is paid twice yearly in gas tax funding, but this amount will be much more than normal because of a one-time contribution of $3.6 million dollars.
“There isn’t a time frame in terms of when we can spend the money, so we are able to set it aside for something in the future. With the restrictions that are in place, we have to look at available projects and suitable projects that align with the expectations of where those dollars will go. As we’re moving through our business planning cycle, right now I suspect there will be a few projects that will show up that probably meet the criteria,” Hallinan says.
“These funds, they’re not a carte-blanche spend on anything and everything. So as we look and move forward with regard to what we’re going to be doing with these programs, we’ll be reviewing opportunities with council and how they fit, how they’re suitability is.”
Hallinan says the federal government decided earlier this year to allocate a one-time bonus of gas tax funding to all local governments.
