The Conservative Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP is deploring Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following a report from Canada’s ethics commissioner.
Cathy McLeod says this is the second time Trudeau has violated the Conflict of Interest Act, noting the first was a trip to Aga Khan’s private island in the Bahamas back in 2017, and now with pressuring former attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould to halt the criminal prosecution of Quebec-based engineering company SNC Lavalin.
“This is not about jobs, this is about a company who had some very, very serious charges against it, and the government trying to interfere in the decisions of the judicial system,” McLeod says.
“It’s a red herring to say it was about the jobs. It was about interference in the judicial system. I think Canadians across this country, and certainly in this riding, they want to believe that we’re a country that respects the rule of law.”
McLeod also says she doesn’t think the whole story has been told, as she says the Ethics Commissioner was denied access to important information in the Prime Minister’s Office about the investigation.
