The BC Teachers Federation President says it is getting ready to expand its aboriginal education this coming school year.
Teri Mooring says it is long overdue. “For a number of years now, we’ve been teaching about residential schools and the important historical wrongs that have happened to aboriginal people over the years. So, we’re looking forward to further developing that. And that’s well underway, that’s well established.”
Mooring says it just wants to ensure that teachers have the resources they need to implement that fully and it’s looking to further develop that. “We’re looking for resources around the implementation of aboriginal knowledge’s and content into every area of the curriculum. That’s an area we’ve been long committed to and we’re happy it is in the revised curriculum.”
Mooring says it is looking to design lessons around specific areas of where students are learning. “We’re looking for local resources. So, students in Kamloops could be learning about the aboriginal communities within the Kamloops area and really look at resources designed locally, with local aboriginal groups.”
