Equestrian Canada has reversed their decision to allow a legally blind girl from Pritchard compete in show jumping competitions.
Kyra Barrett calls competing ‘The funnest thing ever’, but the organization that regulates the sport will no longer let the 10 year old compete with a guide horse.
Kyra’s mom Hayley Barrett was on the NL Morning News, and commented on the group’s response to her competing with able bodied riders with a guide. “They said no one else is doing this in the world. That’s a lie.”
“The only reason I got these ideas to get Kyra Jumping is because I googled it and I went on Youtube and there’s videos in Europe of people jumping full courses with guide horses.”
How does Kyra feel about this? “She’s heartbroken. She’s asking me what she did wrong and why they won’t let her compete.”
Barrett says she’s called Equestrian Canada numerous times looking for a response.
The NL Morning News will have Equestrian Canada CEO Richard Mongeau on at 6:40 Wednesday.
