A follow up to a story from NL News yesterday.
A 10 year old legally blind girl, and equestrian rider, has been told she can’t participate in jumping competitions with the aid of a guide horse.
Kyra Barrett’s mom Hayley says the Pritchard girl was told it was ok to compete with the help of a guide horse.
Then, Hayley says, the sports governing body went back on the decision, making Kyra ineligible to compete.
Equestrian Canada’s CEO Richard Mongeau appeared on the NL morning news says she was never given the green light and it was all outlined in an email, an email that Barretts say they didn’t receive. “It would have been probably a better practice for us to reach out be another means with the parent in order to make sure that the message was well received and that this was a clear understanding.”
“You know, if we were to redo this section I think we’d be looking into having means to inform the parent in order to avoid this confusion.”
Mongeau added Equine Canada has the responsibility to insure safety for the participants and the horses, saying their guiding principal is to make sure they have a safe environment.
