B.C.’s Education Minister wants to see Parkcrest Elementary rebuilt quicker than a typical school would be.
Speaking on the NL Morning News, Rob Fleming says the province is willing to do what it can to speed up the potential two-year build, which could cost an estimated $18-$20 million.
“We’ll start looking at what we need to do around a rebuild and what the options are. There will be a team flying up from the Ministry of Education’s Capital Division on September 20th. We’re there to meet about the good news of the Valleyview expansion anyway. We’ll spend a lot more time talking about Parkcrest as well.”
Fleming says any provincial dollars that are needed to rebuild Parkcrest will come from the government’s Self-Insurance Program, which he says is used in rare circumstances.
“Unless there are other insurance claims that could help fund as well, we simply don’t know that until the fire department is done their investigation. If it’s faulty equipment or whatever the cause of fire may be. If there’s some liability that would be recoverable, and the balance would be from the province.”
He notes it good to see that the school district has a plan in place to house students for the current school year.
