People in the North Shuswap who are fed up with crime are holding a community meeting tomorrow on the topic.
The meeting will happen at The Hub Restaurant in Scotch Creek at 7 p.m., and a resident in the community says 200-300 people are expected to attend.
Area director Jay Simpson says frustrations have come to a head because of a recent spike in crime, and a perception that police aren’t doing enough to deal with situations.
“Crime in our area is something that’s concerning the community in general. We live with it on a daily basis. We know these people who are committing these crimes, who are selling the drugs, who are doing the things that the community is not happy with,” Simpson says.
The meeting comes after a home on Hilliam Road was the subject of a major police scene on Saturday, which happened after residents confronted people living there about stolen property. That home was attempted to be burned down on Tuesday night.
Simpson says the owner does not live in the property and says people have been squatting there and storing possessions; he says the owner did not know anyone was squatting there until being notified by police this week.
Earlier this summer, police also seized more than $300,000 worth of possessions including highly-sophisticated weapons from a home on Leopold Road, about five minutes away from Hilliam Road.
“Our community is a wonderful, friendly place, and we love the North Shuswap. These kind of issues happen everywhere and we’re not unusual in that respect, but everyone has to take some responsibility in terms of keeping an eye out and letting the authorities know when things are unusual. And just look out for their neighbours, look out for their friends.”
