City Council took a look at the city’s transit system at this week’s meeting.
Mayor Ken Christian says they specifically discussed routes number 7 and 9, additional bus shelters and another transit exchange.
“What we did decide was the development and sustainability committee would take a deeper dive into some of the issues in terms of peoples perceptions of transit in Kamloops to really try and get our ridership up,” he said.
Christian says it is going to be a challenge to make more people think about the bus as a viable transportation option.
“Remember, we’re a pick-up truck town. So the transitions from single-occupancy vehicles to public transit is a big mind shift. So, we need to kind of promote that,” Christian added. “It is better or the environment, it leads to better congestion and it should be cheaper.”
He adds that the Kamloops bus system does well for its size, but it does want to see more people thinking about using the bus as an option.
“It’s convenience. Like does it go from point A to point B. So that’s the whole transportation demand management piece. And then time of day, day of week time of thing. I can’t get to work at Walmart on a Sunday and that kind of thing. So, those are impediments.”
